I’m not much of a birder, but there are some avian species I never tire of watching. Whenever I am out fishing or near the lakes that surround my home I’m always tuned in to the resident osprey. The speed and efficiency with which they can dive, pluck a fish out of the water, and carry on, as if nothing untoward had just happened, is just incredible. Ospreys are the only birds of prey that dive vertically for fish rather than snatching one on a horizontal fly by. My favorite moment happens when they hover over the water, eye their catch, and then for a brief moment hang in the air, as if weightless, before succumbing to gravity and plummeting to the surface.
