Time Out

Summer is a time of rest and relaxation in Canada as our season is so short. I've been spending lots of time languishing, hiking and kayaking - taking in all that the warm days have to offer. With the onset of spring come the hoards of mosquitoes and other winged, biting insects. The emergence of dragonflies from their nearly 2 year larval stage in the water, is one that is anticipated and relished. Someone said to me that their arrival is like calling in the military, and indeed this is an apt description.

Whirling about in swarms like tiny choppers, dragonflies on my property fill the air, diving and swooping around me like mini bodyguards while I work in the gardens. Eating hundreds of mosquitoes in a single day, these swat team members of the insect world mark the arrival of summer for me, and I love sitting out in the evening watching them do their job. Every hard worker needs a time out, however, and dragonflies are known to perch and bask for several minutes, cleaning themselves up after gorging and warming their flight muscles for the next round. This is a great time to get photos of them as they will often come back to a favored perch time and again.

This little board is the second piece I've created using bold circular elements to indicate a bokeh effect of filtered light, creating a bit of interest to the piece in an abstract manner. Here's to enjoying the remains of summer, and don't forget to take a time out to breathe and enjoy!
