Oh zebras…the favored candy for scratchboard artists everywhere! I loved the pose of this zebra from my very first day in Botswana and wanted to use it in a unique setting. At first, I contemplated a sunset, but then I thought, why not take it a step further? The sun has set, and the glorious night sky is allowed to shine, the darkness of the wild space allowing for maximum glow of the milky way. Being largely contrived, it wasn’t easy for me to be sure about how this would play out. Envisioning it in my mind is one thing but recreating it successfully for the viewer is another. Clearly in a situation devoid of a human presence there would be no light at all on the animal and it would be in complete shadow. The piece carries the expectation that one is viewing the scene via the flash of a camera, or the headlights of a vehicle. I still hope it evokes somewhat of a dreamlike feeling. I’m quite happy with how this evolved and I hope you are too!
