This Great Horned Owl close-up was a challenging study on rendering fine feather details, as well as some slightly out of focus bits to the left. This is a small board to be attempting such a thing, but hey, that’s how I roll. As the nature of the boards and tools keep changing, I sometimes need to relearn basic skills with what is available to me. Ink that may be too thick on the clay makes achieving a smooth line difficult, so technique needs to be readjusted. One of the things I love most about scratchboard is all the satisfying details you can get with the point of an x-acto blade. This was a great piece to work on in that regard. The regal nature of these birds inspired the formal title!
