As the largest flying bird in Africa, I really wanted to catch sight of this species while on safari. The Kori bustard is listed as a vulnerable species throughout much of Africa; however, they are still relatively common in Botswana. I photographed a few of these amazing birds while in the country, but none of my encounters matched this individual from the first day. Foraging for insects and seeds on the ground, I loved the way its neck feathers were gently draping downward, catching the light. The one errant feather escaping its plumage at the back made for some interest and I couldn’t wait to depict this image in scratchboard. This was a small sized board, so it was a bit of a challenge to get all the delicate banding in the feathers. Adding some out of focus, and in focus grass rounded out the composition.
