Foraging The Fields

Having a naturalized "lawn" of mixed native wildflowers (clover, hawkweed, violet, strawberry etc.) provides a healthy ecosystem for the birds on my property. I enjoy watching the myriad of species that pick through the areas close to the house, whether they are digging into the soil or tossing about the fallen leaves, it's a smorgasbord of insects, other invertebrates and fallen seeds.

One day I was mesmerized by an entire flock of white throated sparrows feeding voraciously on dandelion seed heads, and captured this individual hopping about, stopping long enough to look my way. The goal here was to see if I could render the "grass" as it appeared in my photo...sharp in the narrow range where the focal point of my lens was set, and out of focus everywhere else. Softness like this is difficult in this medium, but I am happy with the result!
