Guardian of Unity, Teacher of Joy

The North American river otter is one of the most charismatic mammals in Canada. Although males are relatively solitary, female otters care for the pups for up to a year. On land, this tight family unit is known as a “romp” and in water a “raft”. Juvenile otters show a high degree of play behavior that lasts through adulthood, and indeed, both young and adult otters from other families will often play together. Effortless swimmers, they are delightful to watch during play, tumbling and/or splashing about with glee. It is no wonder that they figure prominently in First Nations creation stories and legends. Specifically, the otter’s teaching helps guide people to work together, strengthen and support communities, and that laughter and joy are sacred medicine, allowing healing and connection during challenging times. I’ve depicted otters in water before, but I chose a simple portrait this time, a nod to the formality of the title and status of the otter in this legendary role.
